At H Creative Services, we strive to provide opportunities that are open, inspiring, and within reach for new talent entering the workforce. That’s why we’re always keen to help nurture the next generation of workers, right here on our doorstep in Lincolnshire. In fact, every employee and intern on the H Creative Services team thus far has been a local young woman looking to jump-start her career and get some proper experience working at a PR and communications agency.

We were delighted to welcome Evelyn, a local student at Bourne Grammar School, for a week’s work experience in July. Contacting us directly via email, she shared her interest in marketing and business and asked if she could spend a week experiencing what it's like to work at an agency. We were delighted to be able to accommodate the request and provide some valuable insight into the industry to a young person considering their university applications and future career.

This was our first time hosting a work experience placement, and we loved it! We were genuinely so impressed by the standard of work Evelyn produced, the range of tasks she was willing to have a go at and her professional and mature attitude to being in an office environment for the first time. Here’s what Evelyn had to say about her week as a member of the H Creatives team:

Evelyn’s First Week in PR

This week I had my first 9–5 office job, working in PR and marketing. Before this, I didn’t really know what people working in PR actually do day to day. I only knew what PR stood for, but not what it involved in real life.

I’ve had a chance to do lots of different things, like researching a press release about a local business, designing a poster for Helen’s yoga class and getting used to Canva, writing social media posts for a client and scheduling them, updating business plans, and writing a blog about which social media platforms are best for businesses.

I really enjoyed writing the social media posts, especially because they were for a shopping centre client — shopping content is always fun! I also liked writing the blog, since I learned more about social platforms I didn’t know much about, like LinkedIn, and how they help businesses in different ways.

It’s been really fun to get a chance to work in PR this week and learn about everything H Creative Services does. It was great to get to know Helen and Esther too, who have been so friendly and welcoming.

Helen and Tilda

In August, we hosted Tilda, another Bourne Grammar School student, for a week’s work experience. With a keen interest in literature and language, she was a great fit for the business. Again, her diligence and attention to detail were fantastic for a sixth former, and we were particularly impressed with her design skills too! Here’s Tilda’s review of her week with us, learning the ropes of PR and content marketing:

Tilda’s First Week in PR

I have just experienced my first ever 9-5 job working in PR & Marketing with Helen and Esther (and Jerry the greyhound!). I have had so much fun, and I’ve gained a perfect insight into the world of PR and marketing.

Before this week, I was definitely interested in pursuing a career in this kind of field, but I was still a bit undecided as I wasn’t fully sure what it included. I had seen parts of the role from research and social media, but this week has been so valuable in opening up what this job actually includes, and I’ve loved it!

I have done a huge variety of things this week, including writing a September newsletter for Helen’s yoga community, drafting and scheduling social media posts for Horsefair shopping centre, and learning how to use Canva, where I helped to create an HCS pitch deck to send to prospective and current clients. This was an especially interesting task for me as I could be creative with Canva and also learn more about their business and the industry as a whole.

Another highlight of my week was travelling to Grantham, where Helen and Esther had a filming session for their nomination in the Mercury Business Awards. This was really exciting for them, and I really enjoyed seeing the process and how much they deserved it! Helen, Esther and Jerry were all so welcoming and friendly, and they made this week so lovely. I have really enjoyed getting to know them all as well as the PR & Marketing industry, and I am so grateful for this opportunity, as I am sure it will help me considerably in my future.

We’re so proud of how both young women threw themselves into every task we gave them and really made the most of the opportunity - that curiosity and enthusiasm are exactly what the communications industry needs more of. We are firm believers in empowering young people with the understanding, skills, and confidence they need to pursue rewarding careers.

Please feel free to contact us if you are a local group, teacher, or student interested in discussing work experience opportunities. We’d love to help the next bright spark find their first step into PR life.
